What Is Time?

We all know that time exists. We can see the sunset and sunrise. We all get older and eventually die. We remember events that happened in our past. We can measure it. But do we really know what time actually is?

In a universe with no mass or energy, there can be no time as we know it because no movement or material change occurs. We imagine these universes as 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional planes of existence. They are, of course, only mathematical and don’t actually exist.

In our universe, we have three dimensions that give us mass, matter, and energy that cause movement and material changes to take place. We call this time and is an integral part of our 3-dimensional space (space-time).

To elaborate on this, we often think of ourselves as moving in time, but do we move in time, or does time move us? Try to imagine stopping time altogether. In order to do that, we would have to stop all movement in the entire universe. Not just trying to stand still, but nothing at all can move or change its state. Earth would have to stop spinning and orbiting the sun. We could not move a muscle or even breath. Light would have to stop still. Electrons would also have to stop orbiting their atomic nuclei. Even thinking would have to stop.

Time is the measurement of movement and change. Nothing stands still unchanged from moment to moment. A second is a small measurement of time, but a lot can happen in a second. Light will have traveled 186,000 miles in that second. How long, then, is a moment, or is a moment the smallest measurement of time? There actually is no such thing as the smallest amount of time. Let’s define a ‘static moment’ as an observation, much like a snapshot where nothing moves on the image.


If we were able to stop time, all movement and change in a static moment, our 3-dimensional universe would collapse into a 2-dimensional universe.

End of time and end of existence.
